CLAIMTRUST® – Verified Claim Compliance

Audit and certification system for the independent verification of environmental, sustainability and ESG claims based on the EmpCo Directive and the CLAIMTRUST® audit standard.

CLAIMTRUST® – Verified Claim Compliance is an audit and certification system for the independent assessment of environmental, sustainability and ESG statements. The system does not certify a company's or product's environmental performance as such, but the factual, traceable and documented permissibility of specific claims based on defined audit standards. The aim is to prevent misleading environmental communication and to create transparency, traceability and trust vis-à-vis customers, investors, business partners and supervisory authorities.

1. Purpose and Legal Framework

The procedure is guided in particular by:

  • Directive (EU) 2024/825 (EmpCo – Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition)
  • Directive 2005/29/EC (UCP Directive)
  • Act against Unfair Competition (UWG)
  • forthcoming Green Claims Directive
  • recognised principles of transparent and traceable claim communication

The aim is to prevent misleading, insufficiently substantiated or overly general environmental and sustainability statements.

2. Scope of Application

The audit procedure applies in particular to environmental claims, sustainability claims, ESG statements, recycled content, recycling and compostability claims, climate neutrality and CO₂-related statements, statements on future environmental performance, and company-related sustainability statements in marketing, advertising, website content, ESG and annual reports, and investor communications.

Actual environmental performance as such is not the subject of certification. Certification covers exclusively the permissibility, verifiability and transparency of the respective statement.

3. Legal Audit Principles

The audit follows in particular the following principles:

  • Specificity of the statement
  • Verifiability through suitable documentation
  • Transparency of scope and system boundaries
  • Avoidance of misleading statements
  • Traceability of data used
  • Proportionality of evidence
  • Clarity of the statement for consumers and market participants

4. Audit Guideline

Subject of certification: Only the specific statement (claim) is certified. Companies as a whole, products as a whole, general environmental performance or unspecified sustainability promises are not certified.

The audit comprises a structural review (wording, scope, reference object, target audience, context of use), an evidence review (documentation, certificates, supplier declarations, ESG reports, calculations, audit reports) and a legal conformity review (specificity, transparency, verifiability, risk of misleading, scope, context).

Validity: CLAIMTRUST certifications are generally valid for 24 months. Material changes to the statement or evidence must be reported without delay.

5. CLAIMTRUST PreCheck

Before certification, a digital CLAIMTRUST PreCheck can be carried out. The PreCheck serves risk analysis, claim readiness assessment, documentation review, transparency evaluation and identification of potential greenwashing risks. The PreCheck is not a full certification.

Pricing is based solely on the number of claims: CLAIMTRUST Quickscan (immediate risk analysis, traffic-light RED/YELLOW/GREEN) from €49.99, Basic up to 5 claims (€199), Professional up to 15 claims (€499), Business up to 30 claims (€999), and Enterprise (more than 30 claims) as an individual quote.

6. Digital Verification

CLAIMTRUST certifications can be provided as a digital certificate with QR code and token ID. Tokens and certificates are only generated after manual approval by ZERKOM. Public verification is via verify.zerkom.de, enabling certified claims to be checked transparently and traceably.

Classification CLAIMTRUST / ZERKOM

CLAIMTRUST® was developed within the ZERKOM framework and is based on the core principles of transparency, traceability and independent assessment. ZERKOM® Guarantee Marks & Certification

An independent guarantee for consumers and trade. We verify compliance with specific standards and offer legally sound quality seals.

What are Guarantee Marks?

A guarantee mark is a special type of trade mark that serves to guarantee certain properties or quality characteristics of goods or services. These marks are not used by the manufacturer of the products themselves, but by an independent body (ZERKOM®) that verifies and certifies compliance with certain standards. The main function of a guarantee mark is to signal to the consumer that the product or service meets certain established criteria.

The Result: Quality Seals

A quality seal is a visible sign (often in the form of a logo) affixed to products to indicate that they comply with the standards established by the guarantee mark. Only the holder of the guarantee mark has the right to award this quality seal. The holder is generally an independent organisation or institution that carries out regular checks to ensure that the products or services meet the established requirements.

The Difference

Word mark / Fancy mark: Serves to distinguish a company's goods from those of other companies (origin function). Examples: "Kodak" or "Xerox".

Guarantee mark: Confirms certain quality standards independently of the manufacturer (guarantee function). ZERKOM® uses this for guaranteed product properties.

Guarantee Mark "100% Compostable Packaging or Products"

The guarantee mark "100% Compostable Packaging or Products" means that all packaging or products bearing this quality seal are fully compostable and thus comply with certain environmental standards. This mark guarantees the consumer:

  • Environmental friendliness: The packaging or products are designed to be completely biodegraded under certain conditions.
  • Quality control: Compliance with these standards is regularly checked by the holder of the guarantee mark.
  • Trust: Consumers can trust that products bearing this seal are genuinely environmentally friendly.

Only the holder of this guarantee mark has the right to award the "100% Compostable Packaging or Products" quality seal to manufacturers whose products meet the established criteria. This ensures that only tested and certified products may bear this seal.

Benefits of Certification

The certification of 100% compostable packaging or products by ZERKOM® gives companies not only the opportunity to build customer trust, but also demonstrates their commitment to sustainability. Our guarantee marks stand for verified quality and environmental friendliness.
